Be That Girl

This a post dedicated to females all around the world, more so to the young African females out there, be that girl.

Be that girl that knows what she wants. Don’t be afraid to dream big. It’s a jungle out there and you need to know what you want. Don’t be led astray by the Snookies and Kim Kardashians, its ok to have a brain.

Be that girl that knows how to have fun. Be a girl with the girls, be a girls with the boys. You don’t always have to have your guard up like your momma told you too live in the moment. It’s allowed.

Be that girl that rocks the Louboutins one day and still looks fierce in your Converse sneakers. Get fresh and get dirty you can totally do both.

Love life, live life, breathe life. Be full of life and joy.

Be yourself, ooze confidence! Don’t be afraid of “scaring” anyone off. It’s so ok to sing Flawless by Beyoncé and Pretty Girl Rock by Keri Hilson. In fact play it loud and sing at the top of your lungs.

Be that girl that you dream about, be that girl you aspire to be.

Now leaving you with an extract by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie in Beyoncé’s Flawless

We teach girls to shrink themselves
To make themselves smaller
We say to girls
“You can have ambition
But not too much
You should aim to be successful
But not too successful
Otherwise you will threaten the man”
Because I am female
I am expected to aspire to marriage
I am expected to make my life choices
Always keeping in mind that
Marriage is the most important
Now marriage can be a source of
Joy and love and mutual support
But why do we teach girls to aspire to marriage
And we don’t teach boys the same?
We raise girls to each other as competitors
Not for jobs or for accomplishments
Which I think can be a good thing
But for the attention of men
We teach girls that they cannot be sexual beings
In the way that boys are
Feminist: the person who believes in the social
Political, and economic equality of the sexes
